One of a number of UK ‘lo-fi’ indie bands heavily tipped to make inroads into the charts following the success of Bis, Kenickie, named after a character in Grease, formed in August 1994 after Lauren Laverne (Lauren Gofton, 28 April 1978, Sunderland, Tyne And Wear, England; vocals), Marie Du Santiago (b. Marie Nixon; guitar) and Emmy-Kate Montrose (b. Emma Jackson; bass) left their convent school in Tyne And Wear, Sunderland. Drafting in Laverne’s brother, Pete Gofton, nicknamed Johnny X, as their drummer, they established the band as a means of staying in touch while they pursued courses in further education. By the mid-90s their demo tapes were receiving airplay from John Peel, leading to the release of their debut single, ‘Cat Suit’, on Newcastle independent Slampt Records in April 1995.
