Ken Vandermark

22 September 1964, Warwick, Rhode Island, USA. Starting out on his musical career in Boston, tenor saxophonist Vandermark spent time living in Canada where he attended college in Montreal, but has centred his musical life on improvised music enclaves such as New York, San Francisco and, principally, Chicago where he became identified with that city’s underground music scene. He made some early recordings in Boston in the mid-80s with a group, Lombard Street, but as these were self-produced cassettes their circulation and impact was minimal. A similar fate befell Fourth Stream, a group he had earlier led in school in Montreal, although their recording was on LP. From the end of the 80s, he settled in Chicago and began to attract attention although it was two gruelling years before he began to integrate with the musicians with whom he was to have his greatest success.
