Biography

Kem Owens, Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Detroit-based R&B artist Kem battled through numerous setbacks before making his way to the upper reaches of the US charts in 2005. Raised in Detroit, Michigan, the self-taught musician initially struggled to make it in the music business and at times was left almost destitute. He made ends meet by working as a waiter and performing with a wedding band, and was able to raise enough money to finance the recording of his self-released debut album. Released in 2002, Kemistry sold well locally and its subtle jazz-infused R&B attracted the attention of Motown Records. Motown reissued the album nationally the following year, earning the singer a hit single (‘Love Calls’) and selling well enough to attain gold status.
