Biography

2 November 1944, Todmorden, Lancashire, England. Organist Emerson was briefly associated with several British club R&B attractions prior to joining soul singer P.P. Arnold’s backing band in 1967. Known as the Nice, this unit later embarked on an independent career and quickly established itself as a leading progressive rock act. Emerson’s keyboard dexterity and showmanship - he used knives to sustain notes during lengthy improvisations - was undoubtedly their focal point, a feature continued on his subsequent venture, the ‘supergroup’ Emerson, Lake And Palmer. Although deemed pretentious by critics, the trio became highly successful and maintained a rigorous recording schedule throughout the early 70s. Emerson’s solo single, ‘Honky Tonk Train Blues’, recorded during a hiatus in the parent group’s career, reached the UK Top 30 in 1976, but the artist did not pursue such ambitions full-time until ELP was dissolved in 1980....
