Biography
1974, Liverpool, England. This fiercely independent UK singer-songwriter has attracted great praise for her beguiling contemporary folk songs. Williams father was a folk musician and her grandfather an orchestral conductor. She grew up in Liverpool but moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne to complete a degree in Fine Art. Williams first began writing songs while studying and was soon, albeit reluctantly, performing her material at low-key live gigs. She recorded a four-song demo for London Records with producer Head, but steadfastly refused to have anything to do with record companies, electing instead to set up her own Caw label which she ran from her living room. The demo formed the basis for 1999s Dog Leap Stairs, which took its unusual title from a famous set of stone steps near Newcastles quayside and featured Williams quirky artwork on the sleeve.
