31 October 1961, New Orleans, Mississippi, USA. Despite her origins in the Mississippi Delta, Campbell has crafted her reputation in the folk/country singer-songwriter field rather than the blues. Growing up in Sledge, Mississippi, her father was the pastor of the local Baptist Church. She too attended church regularly, but as she later confessed: I always enjoyed the singing part more than the preaching. As a four-year-old she was given her first musical instrument, a ukulele, and two years later began piano lessons. While still in elementary school she took up the guitar and started composing her own songs. The family moved to Orlando, Florida, during her junior high school year, where she sang in a jazz ensemble. She subsequently attended Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, studying music and history, before a masters degree from graduate school in Auburn.
