Biography

Kai Chresten Winding, 18 May 1922, Arhus, Denmark, d. 7 May 1983, New York City, New York, USA. Winding’s family immigrated to the USA in 1934, and soon thereafter he began teaching himself to play trombone. In the late 30s and early 40s he was with a number of big bands including those of Sonny Dunham and Alvino Rey. After serving in the US Coast Guard during the war, he began frequenting New York clubs, including Minton’s Playhouse, and eagerly assimilating bop. He played in Benny Goodman’s mid-40s bebop-inclined band, and then he joined Stan Kenton in 1946. Although he moved on the following year, his impact was substantial and he was now both a name to be reckoned with and popular with audiences. He next played with Charlie Ventura, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, appearing on the Birth Of The Cool album. He also developed a penchant for working with other trombonists, starting with J.J. Johnson, with whom he formed a successful quintet in 1954....
