Biography
One of the US hip-hop undergrounds leading lights, this six-piece crew was formed in 1993 at the Los Angeles, California venue Good Life. Rappers Chali 2na (Charles Stewart, Chicago, Illinois, USA), Akil, Zaakir, Mark 7even, and turntable maestros DJ Nu-Mark and DJ Cut Chemist (b. Lucas McFadden) came together from two separate crews, the Rebels And Rhythm and Unity Committee. They debuted for TVT Records in 1995 with the Unified Rebelution single. Their position at the head of the late 90s new wave of underground rap, alongside artists including Company Flow, Black Star and Dr. Octagon, was confirmed when the Jurassic 5 EP was released in December 1997. The nine tracks were concise and razor sharp in comparison to the bloated epics being released by the rap mainstream, and the EP was immediately hailed as one of the decades most important hip-hop releases.
