Biography

14 November 1964, New York, USA. Edelman, whose father won a Nobel Prize for medicine in 1972, embarked on a solo career in 1996 having first made her name with the acclaimed Rocky Mountain bluegrass group Ryestraw. She began piano lessons at the age of five and continued her studies until she left for Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. She majored in English but continued to take voice lessons and sang with various local bands. Immediately following graduation, she moved to Africa as part of her work in third world development. It was while recuperating from illness there in a friend’s house that she began to teach herself the guitar. Returning to the Bay Area at the age of 26 she linked up with Ryestraw, with whom she spent several years touring, before deciding to pursue a solo career. Her debut, Perfect World, featured 11 original compositions matching bluegrass influences with contemporary themes, as well as Celtic and folkloric elements. Guests...
