Biography
October 1961, Cape Town, South Africa. Butler began his professional career as a guitarist, leaning strongly towards jazz. Later, resident in England, he added engaging vocals to his instrumental skills and broadened his repertoire to incorporate urban, reggae, gospel and Brazilian music. Underscoring all of his work, however, are Butlers African musical roots. He began performing at an early age in his native South Africa, where he was discovered by British record producer Clive Calder. His debut single was one of the first by a black artist to be played on white radio stations. Butler relocated to England in 1984, having signed a recording contract with Calders Jive Records label. He enjoyed success two years later duetting with Ruby Turner on the Top 30 hit, If Youre Ready (Come Go With Me). A track, Lies, from the following years self-titled set broke into the US Top 30 and earned Butler a Grammy nomination.
