Paul Halford, London, England. The bizarre Moped Bands, in their various incarnations, have produced a stream of influential musicians and personalities. The outfit gradually emerged in Croydon, starting off with the Black Witch Climax Blues Band, before switching names to Genetic Breakdown from 1971-75. Some of the key personnel included Ray Burns (later Captain Sensible), his brother Phil, the Berk brothers, and the mysterious Xerxes. It was not until 1974 that Moped joined, as the band became known first as Johnny Moped And The 5 Arrogant Superstars, then Johnny Moped’s Assault And Buggery. However, it was the birth of punk that saw Moped finding an audience for his ‘moronic rock ‘n’ roll’. Playing support slots with the Damned introduced new wave audiences to the strange phenomenon of J. Moped, the performer.
