Biography

John Paul Hammond III, 13 November 1942. He is the son of jazz and rock producer John Hammond Jnr. The younger Hammond took up blues guitar and harmonica while at college and joined the New York coffee-house scene in 1962. In the same year he recorded the first of five albums for Vanguard Records. On 1965's So Many Roads Hammond's backing band included members of the Hawks, the unit who later became the Band. Even after the folk/blues boom had subsided, Hammond continued with his Chicago-blues based music, playing at small clubs and campuses. He continued to record frequently, for Atlantic Records (1968-70), where Robbie Robertson (the Band), Bill Wyman (the Rolling Stones), Eddie Hinton, Barry Beckett and Duane Allman were among the accompanists, and Columbia Records (1971-73), where he took part in a so-called "supersession' in 1973 with Dr. John and Mike Bloomfield.
