Biography
Joseph Temperley, 20 September 1929, Cowdenbeath, Fife, Scotland. After taking a few lessons on alto saxophone, Temperley began gigging at clubs in Glasgow. When he was 20 he joined the Tommy Sampson band, returning with them to London. He then worked with Harry Parry, Joe Loss, Jack Parnell, Tony Crombie and others, and during this period began playing tenor saxophone. A mid-50s stint with Tommy Whittle brought a further change of instrument, this time onto baritone saxophone. He then joined Humphrey Lyttelton, in whose band he remained for seven years. It was while he was with Lyttelton that he made his first big impression on the international jazz scene and in 1965 he settled in the USA, playing in the bands of Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Buck Clayton, Duke Pearson and the Thad Jones - Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra.
