Biography

Joan Drost, 24 February 1941, Buffalo, New York, USA. Sommers is best remembered for her 1962 US Top 10 single ‘Johnny Get Angry’, although millions more would probably better recall her uncredited singing on several commercials for Pepsi Cola in the 60s.

Sommers and her family moved to Santa Monica, California when she was 13 years old and she sang in her high school band. In 1959, she was discovered by an executive from Warner Brothers Records and made an inauspicious debut as the duet partner of Edd Byrnes (from the television series 77 Sunset Strip) on the minor hit ‘Like I Love You’. Sommers finally charted in 1960 with ‘One Boy’, from the Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie, but her biggest hit was the Hal David -Sherman Edwards-penned ‘Johnny Get Angry’, which reached number 7 in the USA in 1962.
