Although often classified as an emo band (albeit a highly experimental one), Joan Of Arc specializes primarily in sleepy soundscapes, with vocals serving as the icing on the cake of a blend of emo, space rock, jazz, and electronica.

Formed in Chicago, Illinois, USA, the band is the brainchild of Tim Kinsella (22 October 1974, Chicago, Illinois, USA; vocals/guitar), who was previously a member of the influential emo outfit Cap’n Jazz. When that unit split up (after countless singles, an album and compilation appearances, all neatly collected in the 1998 double-disc Analphabetapolothology), Kinsella formed Joan Of Arc in 1996. Enlisting keyboard player (and sometime guitarist) Jeremy Boyle and guitarist Eric Bocek, the band toured the same year with another unit comprised of former Cap’n Jazz members, the Promise Ring. A recording contract followed with indie label Jade Tree, for whom they issued several studio albums from 1997...
