Biography

Joan Wasser, 26 July 1970, Biddeford, Maine, USA. A classically trained violinist, Wasser grew up in Boston, later attending the city’s university to pursue studies in music. It was here that her unique playing style led to performances with local acts including the Dambuilders, Those Bastard Souls and Black Beetle. Wasser subsequently decided to pursue a career as a solo artist; however, this decision coincided with a request to join Antony And The Johnsons. After performing with the band for a number of years, she took up a position in Rufus Wainwright’s backing band. These appearances make up just a small portion of an impressive résumé, with credits as a session musician working with acts such as Elton John, Lou Reed, Sheryl Crow and the Scissor Sisters.

In 2002, Wasser formed Joan As Police Woman with Ben Perowsky (drums) and Rainy Orteca (bass). The trio released a self-titled EP in 2004 on the artist’s own...
