Biography

2 September 1940, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA. Pop vocalist Clanton celebrated his 18th birthday with his co-written debut hit, the R&B ballad ‘Just A Dream’, at number 4 in the US Hot 100. His smooth singing style appealed to the teen market and his subsequent releases were aimed in that direction. These included ‘My Own True Love’, which used the melody of ‘Tara’s Theme’ from Gone With The Wind. The title track of the movie Go, Johnny, Go!, in which he starred, gave him another US Top 5 smash and the ballad ‘Another Sleepless Night’ reached the UK Top 50 in July 1960. His most famous record, ‘Venus In Blue Jeans’, co-written by Neil Sedaka, gave him his last US Top 10 hit, in late 1962. The song became a bigger hit in the UK, when Mark Wynter took his version into the Top 5. Clanton went on to become a DJ in Pennsylvania.
