James Warner Ferguson, 10 December 1950, Jefferson City, Missouri, USA. Fergusons father had been a high school music teacher but not long after his son was born the family moved to South Carolina, where his father became music director at a large church. There, Jim began singing in the childrens choir at the age of four and later began taking piano lessons from the church organist. The piano lessons continued into his teens, but his principal musical interest was in singing. While in junior high school, he studied voice with a teacher from the University of South Carolina. During his senior year, he bought a bass which he played to accompany the church choir. After graduating from high school, he entered USCs School of Music as a voice major, later starting formal acoustic bass lessons.
