Biography
15 November 1920, Sealy, Texas, USA, d. 23 June 2000, Englewood, New Jersey, USA. Raised in California as an adopted child, Richardson began playing alto saxophone in local bands in his early teens. In 1941 he was briefly with the Jimmie Lunceford band, then, after military service in the navys pre-flight school orchestra during World War II (led by Marshal Royal), he played in bands headed by Lionel Hampton and Earl Fatha Hines. In 1953 he relocated to New York City, working at Mintons Playhouse with his own group. His own recording sessions for New Jazz Records saw him playing tenor, flute and baritone. The same decade he worked with such leading swing and bop musicians as Lucky Millinder, Kenny Burrell, Gerry Mulligan and Oscar Pettiford.
