A gifted saxophonist, Coffin’s stated early influences were Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and Rahsaan Roland Kirk; in the latter case, Coffin also adopted the technique of playing two instruments simultaneously. A sought-after sideman, he has appeared on more than 100 albums. Among artists from the worlds of country, jazz and pop with whom Coffin has performed and sometimes recorded are Garth Brooks, Chick Corea, the Dixie Chicks, Galactic, Don Henley, Bruce Hornsby, Charlie Hunter, Branford Marsalis, Dave Matthews, Medeski, Martin And Wood, Phish, John Scofield, String Cheese Incident, Van Morrison, and Widespread Panic. From 1997 Coffin spent five years with Bela Fleck And The Flecktones. In January 2005 the Flecktones took a break from touring and Coffin promptly stepped up his busy recording schedule. Coffin is also active in music education, teaching both privately and within the school system.
