Biography
17 January 1953, Long Island, New York, USA. Born into a musical family, his father sang opera, his mother played piano, Berlin took up the violin as a very small child. At the age of 14 he switched to bass guitar, which he later studied at Berklee College Of Music. He was soon playing professionally, mainly in jazz and rock fusion bands, including working with Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Bill Bruford, Billy Cobham, Larry Coryell, Bill Frisell, Isaac Hayes, Jermaine Jackson, Dave Liebman, John McLaughlin, Arturo Sandoval, Mike Stern and Toots Thielemans. He also worked with Vox Humana in the 80s and made some well-received albums. Playing electric bass, Berlin developed a virtuoso technique that allowed him to play solo dates and retain the attention, indeed the awe, of audiences.
