Critically lauded throughout their career, Jawbreaker ran the gamut from independent hardcore to major label pop punk, while maintaining a strong songwriting ability and propensity to dark poetic lyrics. Formed as Red Harvest in Santa Monica, California, USA, by guitarist Blake Schwarzenbach and drummer Adam Pfahler, the band came together formally when Schwarzenbach met bass player Chris Bauermeister while studying at New York University. Pfahler was studying at UCLA at this point and recording sessions entailed several cross-country jaunts. The band then went through a brief period as Rise with the addition of vocalist Jon Liu. Songs written as Rise then appeared on Unfun, Jawbreakers 1990 debut album, with Schwarzenbach taking over on vocals. As the blueprint for much of what would follow, Schwarzenbachs monumental guitar style and dark lyrics were highly influential.
