4 March 1977, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. The youngest of the four sons of Ellis Marsalis, Jason began playing drums as a small child. Intensely schooled and with astonishing sibling role models, he quickly established himself as an independent force. He has recorded with his father, his brother Delfeayo Marsalis, Marcus Printup, and as leader and co-leader of his own groups. Marsalis’ influences range from bop masters such as Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Max Roach to include fusion (Weather Report), Latin (Tito Puente), and bluegrass-based music (Bela Fleck). Marsalis effortlessly glides from one musical format to another. He can be heard playing propulsively but subtly in a regular piano/bass/drums trio led by his father, jazz rock fusion with Neslort, salsa with the Brazilian percussion group Casa Samba, or as leader of his own post bop group.
