Biography

3 January 1969, Detroit, Michigan, USA. Saxophonist James Carter has won praise throughout the jazz world, and also from several critics writing for the popular music press, with his explosive stage show and firebrand technique. Combining an adventuristic streak, born of his love of the avant garde, with a respectful familiarity with the works of Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young, Carter has risen to a position of astonishing visibility in jazz circles within a relatively short space of time.

The youngest of five musical siblings, Carter grew up surrounded by music, his father being a keen radio listener while his brother played occasional sessions as guitarist with Funkadelic and Parliament. Early sessions included work with Wynton Marsalis and the Julius Hemphill ensemble (The Fat Man And The Hard Blues) and the Lester Bowie quintet (The Organizer).
