Nahum Grymes, 29 November 1984, Washington, DC, USA. This contemporary R&B singer was raised in Washington, DC, within a highly musical family. He began singing at a young age, encouraged by his mother who performed as part of a family gospel group in her own church. As he reached his late teens Grymes’ musical tastes began to take on a more secular flavour, with classic soul singers such as Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway a major influence. After casting around for a contract for a couple of years, during which time he sang with the ill-fated vocal group 295, he secured a major label deal with Capitol Records under the guidance of noted producer Rodney Jerkins. Adopting the recording alias of J. Holiday, he released, ‘Be With Me’, at the end of 2006. This single debut made minor inroads into the national R&B charts, but was eclipsed by the follow-up ‘Bed’.
