16 June 1945, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Because Lins father was a graduate engineering student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Ivan was raised in both Brazil and the USA. In Brazil, he pursued his own studies and was also seriously considering a sporting career but sensed that music might offer a more fulfilling future. While growing up, he had heard and enjoyed American big band music on radio and records and when he 18 attended a live performance by pianist Luiz Eca with his Tanuba Trio, a Brazilian jazz-bossa nova group. Inspired by this experience, Lins began learning to play piano and within a couple of years was playing professionally in Rio de Janeiro nightspots. An early composition, Madalena, was recorded by the popular Brazilian artist Elis Regina and sold very well, not only in Brazil but also in Europe.
