Biography
Ivan Joseph Jones, 1 November 1940, Vineland, New Jersey, USA. Jones played guitar from an early age, teaching himself to play on a cut-down instrument given to him by his father when he was in his mid-teens. Working mainly in and around his home state, he began attracting attention for his dextrous skill and his feeling for the blues. When he moved into R&B, he developed a good following not only for his lively playing but also for his undoubted affinity for the blues. His declared influences were Tal Farlow, one of the most subtle jazz guitarists, and Billy Butler, a much raunchier player who came to prominence in an organ combo led by Bill Doggett. Falling in line with the needs of the day, Jones too worked in several organ combos. He also led his own groups, often teaming up on record with start players.
