Formed in Egremont, Cumbria, England in 1982, this rock/pop band had all played together in various guises previously, usually in cover bands. Singer Francis Dunnery (25 December 1962, Egremont, Cumbria, England) spent time with a punk outfit called Waving At Trains, having previously worked as an engineer. The rest of the bands curriculum vitae ranged from bricklayer to factory worker. The bands stable line-up comprised Dunnery (vocals/guitar), John Beck (keyboards), Dick Nolan (bass), and Bob Dalton (drums). Their first release was the strictly amateur All In Red, but under the wing of Virgin Records they hit in July 1986 with Calling All The Heroes, which reached UK number 6. Unjustly assumed to be strictly for teenagers, they were continually marketed as such by their record company.
