Biography

This eclectic and experimental dance music outfit comprises Tyrell (c.1968, Canada) and Paul Martin (b. c.1969, England). Multi-instrumentalist Tyrell was inspired by the UK music scene and came to London in 1988, just as the acid house scene was exploding. He worked as an engineer for various artists including Youth and the Outlaw Posse. Already involved in the dance scene, Martin was selling rare groove records from home, numbering the respected DJs Norman Jay and Gilles Peterson amongst his customers. He was also DJing and became manager of the renowned Black Market Records shop, the first London shop devoted to house music. Eventually, he became an A&R man for Talkin’ Loud Records, signing Roni Size and 4 Hero. Martin and Tyrell met on a London Underground train in 1995, striking up a conversation about Sly And The Family Stone, thanks to the record that Tyrell was holding.
