From the same creative melting pot as Hammerfall and Dark Tranquillity, In Flames was formed in Göthenburg, Sweden in 1990 by Jesper Strömblad (guitar), Johan Larsson (bass) and Glenn Ljungström (guitar). In common with many acts in the city, the band’s line-up was constantly changing. These changes did not affect the band’s sound however; a powerful combination of death, progressive and traditional metal influences, which quickly brought them to the attention of the independent label Wrong Again Records. After securing the recording contract, the band drafted in Mikael Stanne (vocals) and Carl Naslund (guitar). Their 1994 debut Lunar Strain blended restrained acoustic interludes with more traditional heavy metal riffs and melodies.
