Biography
An early example of the supergroup, Humble Pie was formed in April 1969 by Peter Frampton (22 April 1950, Beckenham, Kent, England; guitar/vocals, ex-Herd), Steve Marriott (b. 30 January 1947, London, England, d. 20 April 1991, Essex, England; guitar/vocals, ex-Small Faces) and Greg Ridley (b. 23 October 1947, Carlisle, Cumberland, England, d. 19 November 2003, Alicante, Spain; bass, ex-Spooky Tooth). Drummer Jerry Shirley (b. 4 February 1952, Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, England) completed the original line-up which had a UK Top 5 hit with its debut release, Natural Born Bugie. The quartets first two albums blended the singles hard rock style with several acoustic tracks. Having failed to consolidate their early success, Humble Pie abandoned the latter, pastoral direction, precipitating Framptons departure.
