Founded in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, with the explicit intention of making ‘music’ as far removed from the indie rock template as was physically possible (the band’s title is pronounced Hate Rock), this art rock project was originally known as hTRKRTIO. Nigel Yang (guitar, synthesizer, programming) and Sean Stewart (bass, programming) had previously worked together in Portraits Of Hugo Perez, and recruited Jonnine Clementine Davis (vocals, percussion) to complete the line-up of HTRK. The trio relocated to the more conducive climes of Berlin, Germany, to pursue their stated musical aims. The seven-track mini-album Nostalgia was recorded live using two microphones and an ancient tape deck, and recalled the work of fellow Berlin émigrés the Birthday Party with its blend of guitar feedback, minimalist bass lines and a drum machine.
