This California, USA-based, classic rock-influenced side project of Comets On Fire co-founder Ethan Miller (5 March 1977, Eureka, Humboldt County, California, USA; guitar/vocals) was conceived in 2004 as an alternative to the chaotic psychedelic rock outfit that he had put together in Santa Cruz in 1999. Like Comets On Fire, Howlin Rain was originally intended to be a one-off recording project. While the former had wholly embraced noise and discordance, Miller decided to harness these facets for the latter, tying them to a more commercial sound that invoked Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Steve Miller Band and Free. For these sessions he recruited friend and long-time musical compatriot Ian Gradek (b. 1978, Eureka, Humboldt County, California, USA; bass, banjo, vocals) and leader of the freak-folk collective the Sunburned Hand Of The Man, John Moloney (b.
