25 November 1963, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. By specialising in a repertoire of show tunes, jazz and popular classics Cole has established herself as a major star in her native Canada and Japan. Working with a talented backing team of Aaron Davis, a respected Toronto pianist and composer, and David Piltch, a veteran of work with Chet Baker and k.d. lang, Cole’s explorations of her musical sources is much more rigorous than might be imagined by a simple perusal of her catalogue. Her contralto has detected new nuances in familiar material and liberated everything from jazz to country standards from their historical context, encouraging critical comparisons to artists as diverse as Jane Siberry, Edith Piaf and Sarah Vaughan.
