Biography
Herbert Fields, 24 May 1919, Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA, d. 17 September 1958, Miami, Florida, USA. Fields played clarinet and alto (occasionally tenor) saxophone in several bands in the mid- and late 30s and also studied formally at the Juilliard School of Music. Among the leaders for whom he worked were George Handy, Raymond Scott, Woody Herman and Oran Hot Lips Page. In military service during World War II Fields led a service band, and after the war he joined Lionel Hampton. He led his own small and large groups during the late 40s, recorded with Miles Davis, but was unable to maintain the momentum of his career and by the following decade was mostly playing commercial music. Fields playing was varied, perhaps even erratic at times. At his best, he could be a fluid and imaginative player, especially on clarinet. Sometimes, however, he could be undisciplined and his career appeared to lack direction.
