Biography
Befitting a band associated with community and benefit concerts, this UK outfit was founded in the hippie enclave centred on Londons Ladbroke Grove during the late 60s, and made their debut live appearance on 29 August 1969. Dave Brock (Isleworth, Middlesex, England; guitar/vocals), Nik Turner (b. Oxford, Oxfordshire, England; saxophone/vocals), Mick Slattery (guitar), Dik Mik (b. Richmond, Surrey; electronics), John Harrison (bass) and Terry Ollis (drums) were originally known as Group X, then Hawkwind Zoo, prior to securing a recording contract. Their debut, Hawkwind, was produced by Dick Taylor, former guitarist with the Pretty Things, who briefly augmented his new protégés on Slatterys departure.
