Biography

Formed in Philadelphia in 1954, the Blue Notes - Harold Melvin (25 June 1939, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, d. 24 March 1997, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA), Bernard Willliams, Jesse Gillis Jnr., Franklin Peaker (b. 1935, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, d. 15 November 2006, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA) and Roosevelt Brodie - began life as a doo-wop group. In 1960, they enjoyed a minor hit with a ballad, "My Hero', but failed to make a significant breakthrough despite several excellent singles. By the end of the decade only Melvin remained from that early group, with Bernard Wilson, John Atkins and Lawrence Brown (b. 5 November 1944, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, d. 6 April 2008, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA) completing the line-up. Two crucial events then changed their fortunes. Teddy Pendergrass (b.
