5 April 1948, Enschede, the Netherlands. Hearing the blues on radio and records, Theessink taught himself how to play guitar and mandolin. Performing in semi-professional clubs from his late teens, he gradually became known in his homeland and also in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. During the 70s Theessink recorded and his following expanded. Almost inevitably, given the limitations of his method of assimilation, Theessinks style developed in a way that differed subtly from those artists he tried to emulate. This gave him the advantage of having a firm base in the roots of the music while displaying distinctive differences in style and interpretation. Fortunately, he maintained these unusual qualities even after he made visits to the USA, which became increasingly often through the 80s and 90s, during which period he also recorded for American labels.
