New Jersey, USA. As a boy Trooper regularly made the 40-mile pilgrimage into New York City to check out the local folk clubs. He was only drawn to country music as he grew older, forming the Gram Parsons -influenced the Ravioli Brothers, at high school. He left home at 18, moving to Lawrence, Kansas, before heading further south to Austin, Texas, alongside former Ravioli Brother Richard Scott ? the two performing together as Trooper And Scott. He enrolled at Kansas University, before returning to New York and putting various combinations of bands together, with musicians including Larry Campbell (later with Bob Dylans band), Greg Shirley and Walter Thompson. Troopers band toured in Scandinavia and England, and released an album in 1986 for the Wild Twin label, co-produced by Greg and Carter Cathcart (ex-Laughing Dogs).
