Biography

One of France’s leading death metal bands, Gojira was originally known as Godzilla and was formed in 1996 by brothers Joe Duplantier (guitar/vocals) and Mario Duplantier (drums), with Christian Andreu (guitar) and Jean-Michel Labadie (bass) completing the line-up. Despite recording a 1998 demo as Godzilla, legal issues forced the quartet to change its name to Gojira (the original Japanese name of the legendary fictional monster). Their 2001 debut, Terra Incognita, was saturated with references to the band members’ strong environmental beliefs, and also displayed a fluid musical style that drew on progressive and thrash elements in addition to their favoured death metal. Subsequent albums have seen the quartet growing ever more experimental in their musical approach, attracting critical attention beyond their native France. 2005’s From Mars To Sirius was an ambitious concept album about saving the Earth.
