This US band was formed in 1996 by Southern Lord label boss Greg Anderson (guitar, ex-Burning Witch), with the line-up completed by two former Obsessed members, Guy Pinhas (bass) and Greg Rogers (drums). After initial jams together the trio wanted to add a melodic vocalist to complement their ultra-heavy doom metal sound, eventually selecting Pete Stahl (ex-Wool). Goatsnake’s initial output comprised two 1998 limited edition singles, ‘IV’ (on Prosthetic Records) and ‘Man Of Light’ (on Warpburner). Their full-length debut I featured production contributions from the Melvins’ Buzz Osborne. While maintaining a retro, hard rocking feel, the album drew heavily on the sombre atmosphere and down tuned riffage of the members’ former bands, but was still consistently in check with late 90s metal.
