Giorgio Gaslini / La Notte Dei Diavolli
22 October 1929, Milan, Italy. Gaslini learnt the piano as a child and started performing when he was 13 years old, appearing with his own trio at the Florence Jazz Festival in 1947. He studied at the Milan Conservatory before a career in which he has been equally at home in jazz and classical music. He would like to bring these various skills together in what he describes as total music. He composed and played the music for Antonionis film La Notte (1960) and wrote a jazz opera Colloquio Con Malcolm X (1970). He was friends with Eric Dolphy and worked with artists including Don Cherry, Gato Barbieri, Max Roach and Roswell Rudd as well as performing as a solo pianist and with his own groups. He has been involved in music education both directly as a teacher and by taking his quartet into less usual venues like factories and hospitals.
