Formed in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, the Gigolo Aunts originally comprised Dave Gibbs (vocals/rhythm guitar), brothers Phil (lead guitar) and Steve Hurley (bass), and Paul Brouwer (drums), who had played together since 1981, initially as a band entitled Sniper. This name was soon jettisoned for Marauder, then Rosetta Stone (since they did not know a band of the same name already existed). When they finally became the Gigolo Aunts (from a Syd Barrett song), there was little immediate fanfare, despite a developing ability to write inviting guitar pop songs in the tradition of Big Star.
