Biography
17 November 1926, Cranston, Rhode Island, USA. Coming from a musical background, Masso began on trumpet, then became a competent multi-instrumentalist, playing piano and vibraphone. However, it was hearing a Lou McGarity trombone solo on Benny Goodmans recording of Yours that determined his final choice of instrument. Despite his background, and a two-year stint with Jimmy Dorsey in the late 40s, Masso opted for a career as a teacher of music. In 1973, with his family grown up, he decided to return to playing after persistent needling from Bobby Hackett. He spent a year and a half with Goodmans Sextet, played with the Worlds Greatest Jazz Band and on some of Buck Claytons later Jam Sessions. Since then, Masso has toured extensively, usually as a single, sometimes in harness with Scott Hamilton, Warren Vaché, Spike Robinson, Bobby Rosengarden and other mainstream artists, playing clubs and festivals around the world.
