29 December 1969, Summit, New Jersey, USA. Colligan was raised in a suburb of Baltimore, Maryland, where he attended Peabody Conservatory of Music. He had taken up the trumpet at the age of nine and his major at the conservatory was Classical Trumpet and Music Education. From his earliest days at school, his teachers had actively encouraged him to listen to jazz and as a result he heard many visiting jazz musicians at local clubs and also listened extensively to jazz on record. Colligan continued to develop his musical knowledge, having started playing drums at high school, eventually moving to the piano upon which instrument he first attracted serious attention. Additionally, he plays Hammond B3, synthesizer and drums (all of which, as well as piano, he plays on Unresolved).
