Biography
Identical twins Jay (John) and Mike Aston, ostensibly Gene Loves Jezebel, enjoyed cult appeal, largely within the UK gothic rock community, but achieved greater success in America. The pair grew up in the South Wales town of Porthcawl, together with guitarist Ian Hudson. After moving to London, they made their debut in late 1981 supporting the Higsons. A recording contract with Situation 2 resulted in Shavin My Neck (a collection of demos) the following May. The dense, experimental sound was matched by live performances, featuring bass player Julianne Regan and drummer Dick Hawkins, where they mixed almost tribal rhythms with furious guitar work. Hawkins was replaced by a succession of drummers, including John Murphy (ex-Associates; SPK) and Steve Goulding, while Regan left to front All About Eve.
