Biography
Despite being responsible for such funky sounds, Galactics founding members, Jeff Raines (guitar) and Robert Mercurio (bass), were originally in Washington DC, USA-based punk bands. It was only after relocating to New Orleans, Louisiana, that the duo began playing the funk and soul inflected sounds closely associated with the area (the Meters, the Neville Brothers, Dr. John). Rounding out the line-up soon after were Rich Vogel (organ), Ben Ellman and Jason Mingeldorff (saxophone), Stanton Moore (9 July 1972, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA; drums), and Theryl The Houseman deClouet (vocals). It did not take long for them to gain a local following, that soon spread to include the jam band crowd, as well. A recording contract with the Capricorn label followed, as did 1996s reissue of Coolin Off (originally issued as an independent release) and 1998s Crazyhorse Mongoose.
