Formed in Birmingham, England, in 1985, this all-female quartet comprised Maggie Dunne (5 June 1964, Solihull, West Midlands, England; vocals, keyboards, guitar), Jo Dunne (b. 12 November 1968, Birmingham, England; bass, piano), Vickie Perks (b. 9 October 1968, Birmingham, England; vocals) and Tina O’Neill (b. 20 January 1969, Solihull, West Midlands, England; drums, percussion, saxophone). Their unusual name was coined after they had purchased a fuzzbox for their guitars and Maggie casually announced: ‘We’ve Got A Fuzzbox And We’re Gonna Use It!’ The fuzzbox drone dominated their early work, particularly on such songs as ‘XX Sex’ and ‘Rules And Regulations’, which displayed a raw, intense sound overladen with strong harmonies and barbed sloganeering lyrics.
