Formed in Orange County, California, USA by Scott Hill (vocals/guitar), Ruben Romano (drums), Brad Davis (bass) and Eddie Glass (lead guitar). Their debut EP was released in 1990, establishing their headily psychedelic, groove-orientated approach. While many compared them to Kyuss, Fu Manchu preferred to make cryptic references to pharmaceuticals and produce cover images that tied them to older generations of rock bands. In Search Of... , for example, featured a woman in flares preparing to start an illegal drag race, while the album’s title derived from a lacklustre science-fiction programme of the 70s. Suitably, Hill has never spent much time perfecting his lyrics, instead using his voice as a fifth instrument to complement the band’s dense, rhythmic passages.
