Biography
Vince McCusker (guitar, vocals) was the mainstay of this 70s outfit from Belfast, Northern Ireland. With Steve Houston (keyboards, vocals), Peter Farrelly (bass, vocals) and Martin Foye (drums), he recorded a debut album for Dawn Records, which defined the pomp-rock style with vaguely mystical overtones that sustained Fruup on a five-year career around the European college circuit. During exploratory sessions for 1974’s Seven Secrets, Houston was replaced by John Mason, Ian McDonald played saxophone on the following year’s Modern Masquerades. Although respected as a competent act, and the group was unable to climb to higher rungs on the progressive rock ladder before punk’s levelling blow. Obliged to drastically reduce engagement fees, the inevitable cracks appeared and, by 1978, Fruup was no more.
